What is Defragmentation?

In fact, the beginning of a file can be located at the end of a hard disk, the middle part can be located at the beginning of this hard disk and the end part of the file can be located anywhere on your hard disk. Thus files become spread all over the hard disk.

So the greater is file fragmentation on your hard disk => the more time it takes for hard disk to move the heads => consequently the lower is the performance. Also don't forget about quick hard drive wear-out because of more frequent heads movements.

The idea behind the disk defragmenter is to collect separate file parts spread all over the hard disk space into one single module, so that every file became contiguous.
